Celluloid Talcum Box”

4″ in Diameter,  2″ high

Celluloid was used for vanity accessories, including talcum boxes during the Victorian era and into the 1930’s.  Because of its flammability, the use of celluloid for powder boxes was replaced with other materials,  including ceramic, crystal and bronze.

The Victorians labeled cleanliness as next to godliness  and  with that came the desire to be respectable.  Daily bathing became a luxury demanded by the rich.  A bath in that era might include a rub-down with pumice stones, followed with the application of oils and powders.
